Your First Scuba Diving Day in Phuket: 10 Things to Know

Your first scuba diving day in Phuket will be easier if you know what matters before reaching the boat. These ten practical tips cover the decisions that affect comfort and safety; your instructor’s briefing and the current operating plan always take priority.

1. Complete the medical form honestly

Read the current diver medical questionnaire in advance. Some answers require a medical professional’s evaluation before you can dive. Do not hide medication, asthma, ear problems, recent illness or another condition because you are worried about missing the trip.

2. Be clear about your water confidence

Tell the instructor whether you are a comfortable swimmer, have snorkelled before or feel anxious in deep water. Different programmes have different swimming requirements, but honest information helps the professional choose the right pace and level of support.

3. Pack for a full day around water

Bring swimwear, a towel, sun protection, any required documents and practical clothing for the journey. Use a reusable water bottle where the operator allows it. Confirm what equipment and food are included for your exact booking rather than relying on an old blog list.

4. Plan for seasickness

If you are prone to motion sickness, ask a pharmacist or doctor about suitable options before the trip. Some medicines can cause drowsiness or may be unsuitable for diving. Eat sensibly, stay hydrated and tell the team if you feel unwell.

5. Confirm pickup and meeting details

Phuket is large, and transfers depend on hotel area and the current trip. Check the pickup place, time and contact route the day before. Be ready early so the boat and other guests are not delayed.

6. Listen to the whole briefing

The briefing explains equipment, breathing, hand signals, equalising, buddy procedures and how to stop the activity. Ask questions before entering the water. You do not need to pretend you understand something that is unclear.

7. Equalise early and never push through pain

Equalise gently before discomfort builds and repeat as you descend. If your ears do not clear, signal the instructor, stop and move slightly shallower. Never force the descent or continue through pain.

8. Stay with the instructor or buddy

Do not swim away to follow a turtle, shark or camera subject. Maintain awareness of your instructor, buddy, depth and air. Wildlife is never worth separation from the dive plan.

9. Practise responsible buoyancy

Keep fins and equipment away from coral and the seabed. Do not touch, feed, chase or collect marine life. If you use a camera, establish stable buoyancy before concentrating on a picture.

10. Leave enough time before flying

DAN recommends minimum pre-flight surface intervals of at least 12 hours after one no-decompression dive and at least 18 hours after multiple dives in a day or diving on multiple days. After a dive requiring mandatory decompression, DAN’s current fast-facts guidance uses at least 24 hours. Longer intervals reduce risk; no interval guarantees safety.

Your first dive does not need to be perfect

A successful first day means that you communicated honestly, followed the briefing and stayed within your comfort and training. It does not require a certain depth, animal or number of minutes underwater. If you need more practice or decide not to continue, that is a responsible choice.
