south kata reef

Kata Reef is the perfect dive site for new divers looking for their first scuba diving experience or a seasoned diver to refresh their diving skills. The coral reef is located conveniently just a short distance from the shoreline, with a maximum depth of 14 meters / 45 feet.

Kata reef is partly a nursery for many juvenile fish such as sweetlips, yellow snapper, and angelfish, using the reef’s natural protection. Some of the unique marine life to be found on this coral reef are pipefish, seahorses, moray eels, cuttlefish, rays, and, if your lucky, Hawksbill turtles.

North Kata reef

Recently, we encountered a new resident to the reef, a Mimic Octopus, the master of disguise. This unique octopus can mimic up to fifteen other sea creatures like the poisonous lionfish and venomous sea snakes. It can change its colour shape and the way it moves, confusing a predator for enough time to make its escape. Kata Reef is the only dive site where we have encountered one of these truly remarkable creatures.

Kata beach is located on the west coast of Phuket and is best dived between September- April.

Scuba diving requires a minimum level of health and fitness. Anyone, regardless of age, with shortness of breath, blurred vision, or any form of chest pain may need to reconsider diving. Avoid disappointment, download and review the Diver Medical form to ensure you won’t need a physician’s approval to dive before enrolling in a scuba course.

We expect no issues but in the unlikely event of injury, it only makes sense to be prepared. Check your current travel insurance covers you for scuba diving activities. Be sure to contact them directly to make sure. If they do not then we recommend DAN Scuba Diving Insurance.
